Margaret Gill is a critic and scholar publishing mainly in the local media on poetry, dance, the visual arts, drama, industrial relations and the economy. She has curated film and visual arts shows, designed a children’s band for carnival in Trinidad and Tobago (1984) and helped produce costumes for 3 years for the Wes Hall Banks Breweries Band for Crop Over Kadooment in Barbados. She is currently tutor in Fundamentals of Written English at the Cave Hill campus of The UWI where she has worked for over 20 years and also taught Commonwealth and West Indian poetry, drama and the novel, and Caribbean women’s leadership. She was for several years also Co-ordinator of the UWI foundation course, Caribbean Civilisation and the course she now tutors, Fundamentals of Written English. She is twice winner of a Frank Collymore Literary Endowment Award, 1998 first prize, and 2006 second prize to Kamau Brathwaite. She was International Visiting Writer 2007 at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKB) and one of two adjudicators of the HKB English Poetry Writing Competition 2007. She received an arts Fellowship to the Banff Arts Centre, Alberta Canada 2012, and was designated Poet Laureate 2013/2014 by the UWI Institute for Gender and Development Studies- Nita Barrow Unit. She is an Honorary Fellow in Writing at HKB and was awarded a 2016 Oshe Emeka (Give thanks for great deeds) in Cultural Development by the Government and Peoples of Barbados.
